Reliving the fabulous fifties

Poodle skirts and bobby socks, diners and jukeboxes, drive in movies and rock and roll, Elvis Presley, Peanuts comic strip and the hula hoop.

Every decade has its trends and fashion statements and the fifties is no different. So in April, as part of the 2021 Seniors Festival, we took a trip down memory lane to the fabulous fifties, celebrating the fashion, music and pop culture of the era.

The event was hugely popular and quickly booked out.

Hourglass figures, polka dots, crop sweaters and cardigans

Dianne from the Cavalcade of History and Fashion delivered a lively presentation, in which she invited the audience to reminisce about their favourite fifties outfits.

Economic good times meant women could afford to spend money on clothes, and that is exactly what they did.

The presentation was accompanied by a display of gowns and accessories – hats, underwear and lots more.

Rock around the clock

Singer songwriter Joanna Weinberg performed hits many remembered from the fifties, with her customary energy and style.

As well as singing and songwriting, Joanna’s varied career includes roles as musical director, scriptwriter, actor, humour valet and choir maestro.
